Undisturbed Sleep at Night, A Key to Fall Reduction and Overall Good Health

Poor quality sleep, correctly identified as fragmented sleep, was a primary contributor to resident falls. CMS and long-term care providers have never considered sleep as a part of the plan of care and services provided to residents. Empira applied for and was awarded a grant to improve the quality of sleep for their residents by reducing night time disturbances and having residents awake and engaged during the day. Empira nursing homes have come to the forefront in recognizing that a good night of undisturbed sleep is one of the most important services we can give our residents. By eliminating or minimizing nighttime interruptions, we can encourage more of the restorative sleep our residents need to maintain and enhance their quality of life. Sleep is not just a state we fall into, but a necessary and vital part of keeping all of us healthy and safe. With sleep in mind, we have reviewed our practices and cares and have made adjustments that include reduce disturbances to nighttime sleep and increase daytime activities for our residents.
